Yeah, Laguna Beach!

Laguna Beach is California's first city to oppose gay marriage ban

Laguna Beach City Council voted to oppose Proposition 8, the anti-gay November ballot measure that would limit marriages in California to those between a man and a woman:

Laguna"Mayor Jane Egly and Councilmember Toni Iseman made a jump to bring the opposition before the council as an item in hopes of being the first city in the state to oppose the proposition. Mayor Egly reminded members of the public present at the council meeting that because of the Brown Act, only two members of City Council may bring an item before the rest of the council, and assured the audience that the entire council supported the opposition."

a train trip

So, Chris and I got away for the weekend. First time in a long time. What with Chris having classroom work to do every night, every weekend, and with masters classes assignments on top of that, it's all work ... which makes Joe a dull boy. Not much left to do but drink all the time with Futterman.

I exaggerate, of course, but hyperbole is our friend.

But I don't stretch it that much, really.

So for the 4th, it was great to get outta town, the first time since our San Fran trip. We took Amtrak (so that Chris could get work done) up to visit our buddies Robin & Jackie in Western Mich. Robin some of y'all will remember from back in our Detroit days. Long story, but she is no longer working with me at the paper because of health reasons, and now lives on a lake about 20 miles outside Kalamazoo, which is where the train left us off.

We had a good weekend of relaxing, turtle-watching, Robin's excellent cooking and Jackie's beyond compare storytelling. More here on Robin's site, A Very Small Life.

parade delay update

so, Windy City Times reports in its parade edition (on newsstands now!) that the parade was delayed nearly an hour (I thought it was shorter, but when you been a-drinkin' ...) when a dancer fell off a float.

doh!

and ouch!

poor dear. and it turns out it was a woman, a real girl. which makes sense coz you KNOW there ain't no way that a drag queen would fall off a float just coz she was dancing. I mean, my gawd! a drag queen, if nothing else, must have perfect balance ... especially when mounted on a moving object.

notes from a parade

well, first, they ain't my photos. camera still broken from when it went skittering across the floor in a Sacramento Old Town bar when my sister tripped while drinking beer and beating my brother's ass at pool and I instinctively tried to keep her from doing a face plant. ain't I a great bro?

second, towleroad.com described Chicago's parade as going off without a hitch. ain't so. that's just an example of a blogger, not a journalist, trying to do a wrap-up with no resources. see, ya still need mainstream journalism. the parade was delayed about 30-40 minutes very soon after starting. some say it was coz a woman passed out. we saw paramedics take someone. but the parade did not parade on. others say a float ran over someone's foot. but that doesn't seem like enough either. whatever happened, the parade was stalled a long time. revelers started leaving, coursing down the parade route, right in the street. the police couldn't control them all. but eventually it got under way again.

I like the cops photo, but by the time the float got to us, it was nearly empty. rain.

yup. it rained on our parade. but we were really cool with it because it was excellent crowd thinner. we started out right at our place, which is 2 blocks from parade stepoff, about 7 people back. as a storm threatened with black black skies to the north, the short Latino family to our side left, and suddenly we were only 5 back. as the rain started, just a few drops, I mean, jeez, more and more left and we were only 3 back. then when it poured, well, we had front row! by then the parade had finally started again and everyone cheered.

the best spectacle was the young topless girl (with stickers for pasties) falling down drunk across the street from us. she was gripping the steel bars of the barricade and pushing her face against the bars. those bars were the only thing keeping her from going completely horizontal. mostly she was a heap. a heap of sick ... soon she started vomiting. it was great! we cheered. it was better when she chucked on herself. the cop who had been tending the crowd in front of us all afternoon went over to her ... but not to help. turns out he wanted her to put a shirt on. ya don't have the freedom to let the titties swing free, but you sure as hell have the right to be falling down drunk and make an arse of yourself.

we had too many, way too many, corporate floats, poltician floats and lame floats. not enough like the one with this dude. at least two idiot entrants drove Hummers. c'mon. Hummers? don't bring a Hummer to a gay parade ... you can get a hummer, but don't bring one. we booed them and told them to go away. didn't work. we also heckled an alderman. not ours, no. he's a gay. no, instead, we heckled the idiot who sponsored the anti-foie gras city ordinance. "We love foie gras. We love foie gras." an aide told him what we were chanting and he colored, embarrassed. ha! idiot. don't legislate against personal freedoms then march in a gay parade.

lots o corporate floats hire models. they don't have many hotties to put in speedos and such. but it looks like Zell cut the RedEye (above) budget this year.

update: forgot the other spectacle. when the parade was stalled, a group of 6 or 8 cops on horseback mobilized to deal with the situation. one horse took a great big poo. ... right across the street from our viewing spot. far enough away to not be gross but close enough to watch the fun. ... what fun is a pile of horse poo, you ask? why, great fun as you watch marchers march through it. ... especially when they did it while in flipflops as one sassy boy did. ooo. cheers and lots of clapping. if we liked someone though, for example, all the drag queens, we waved at them and pointed. no way we wanted a nice dress to get messed. juvenile? yes. but we like our humor simple

quaking

hey! SF has nothing on Illinois. We had an earthquake this morning. Of course, since it was at 4 something, I didn't feel nothing. But Chris was up and on his way to Bulldog. Didn't feel anything either. Didn't feel the aftershock at 10:15 a.m. neither.

This is the biggest Midwest earthquake in my adult life ... at least as I remember. Usually they have been in the 3 zone. Nothing to y'all in Quake Central, I know. But around here, it's at least coffee talk ... until the next celebrity scandal anyway.

not much new, how about you?

yo.

Seems as if there must be something new to post, but cannot think of much. I was in California last month for a long weekend, but no where near the points of highest BGN interest, SF and Laguna, so was unable to make sidetrips. My siblings, mom & I flew out to Sacramento to witness my youngest brother's retirement from the Air Force after 26 years. It was a moving ceremony.

Chris didn't come with me on that trip, but we will both definitely be in San Francisco at the end of the month!

Get out your boas.

In the meantime, here is a photo of us siblings in front of the first plane Paul ever worked on. It's now a museum piece, permanently parked at Travis AFB.

Uber Tuesday

Time to turn the page, folks. He's my man...

snow report

with a month left of winter snows (and, historically, two months of possible spring snows), we stand at 39.5 inches total for the season. Only 17 seasons since 1929-30 have been snowier here, but that number includes the entire season. Ranking the snowfall so far against the same point in the past 78 years shows the potential for this winter to be among the seven snowiest, if trends continue. ... And they probably will as three more snow storms are coming this week.

The image above, taken yesterday, Groundhog's Day, represents only last week's 9-inch-plus snowfall as we had thaws earlier that melted the buildup.

So what's the big deal? This is Chicago, right?

Right.

But y'all in California just like to feel good about your decision to leave all this behind. Dontcha?

ashley street photo

the new photo behind the title is from our old Ashley Street building, but from how it looks today, not how it looked then. Don't know that I have any images of the facade from back then. Anyone else have something float-tanky?

old gay folks home

"Europe's first old people's home for gay residents is already a huge success in its first month."

Read more here.

See, we've got to get moving on the plan! Alan, you're going to have to invest money in some property in Northern Cal, large enough to build a compound where we'll all live. Maybe near wine country so that we'll have part-time jobs pouring tastings to drunk twenty- and thritysomethings driving up from S.F.

Gregorio and Al will have to figure out the financing of the whole thing. Boyer will produce, of course. Paulie will outfit all the rooms very tastefully with the coolest designs.

So, let's get cracking. Moneka, you're a very good organizer, so you need to grab that bull by the horns.

It's all coming sooner than we think. Boyer is almost 50.

you go, Chi Chi

Can't say that most of us need this message, but good for Chi Chi for making this video and putting it out there.

It's worth watching because it is so well done. Preaching to the choir about safe sex, sure, but she also makes a strong point about the guys taking risks in bareback videos.

Plus, on top of the important message, the video is fun ... and we get to see Chi Chi as a man ... gasp!

Check it out at safesexishotsex.com or where I first saw it Towleroad.

a new look?

it's about time for a new BGN template. This one has been around, like, a year or something.

but all the ones on blogger are so ho-hum. guess I'll have to learn more coding. but who has the time?

... (denotes pause in space/time continuum) ...

ok. instead I played with the colors and the type of the title. big whoop. it's like getting a new haircut when really you need to go to the gym and workout for like 16 weeks straight.

but it'll do for now.

and I gotta go to work!

wait wait. ok. that's better.

ok, so a poster's profile doesn't show up unless they make a comment, so I'm putting my avatar here.

should we add a profile's section to the blog? what do folks think?

avatar

hey, BGNers.

added an avatar to my profile, just for fun. check it out by clicking on my profile.

the scooter isn't the right color, but that's all they had (got the avatar on my yahoo e-mail site). I kept meaning to put up a photo of me on my real scooter this summer, then the fall. now will have to wait until spring ... or a really good thaw.

Read the Comments and Learn

In today's Chronicle, there is an article about an outbreak of staph infections in the gay community in San Francisco. One smart reader commented on SF Gate: " I blame the gays for my amazing hair."

a happy tune

finally, blogger has enabled video uploads. well, I guess they did it a while ago, but I didn't notice.

This is the perfect inaugural clip, although some of you have already seen it.

... um, I don't know why it came out sideways! Boyer? HELP!

ladies remember to make your voices heard . . . VOTE TODAY ! !

and of course just when i thought the decison of who to vote for as mayor of san francisco would be easy - - - I now have to choose between a hot, handsome, progressive, slightly scandelous Gavin OR a Pedro Almodovar type TRANNY character . . . hmmmm which way do you think i will vote?
